The Weight You Were Never Meant to Carry

There is a question I often ask people during resilience workshops. "What are you carrying that no longer belongs to you?" At first, the room usually falls silent. Then the answers begin to emerge. Guilt. Expectations. Other people's opinions. Old mistakes. Family responsibilities. The pressure to always be the strong one. It is remarkable how much weight we carry without ever stopping to ask whether it was ours to carry in the first place.

Many of us move through life believing that resilience means carrying everything without complaint. We convince ourselves that if we just work harder, give more, stay quieter, or push through a little longer, everything will eventually become easier. But resilience was never meant to be about carrying more. It was meant to help us carry what truly matters.

Some of the heaviest burdens we live with are completely invisible. They are not physical, yet they affect every part of our lives. They influence the way we think, the way we speak to ourselves, and the way we show up in our relationships. We carry expectations placed on us by society, by family, by workplaces, and often by ourselves. We carry responsibility for things that were never within our control. We replay conversations from years ago. We continue punishing ourselves for decisions we made with far less knowledge than we have today.

Over time, these invisible burdens become so familiar that we stop noticing them. They become part of our identity. We begin believing that being resilient means never putting them down.

The truth is quite different.

One of the greatest acts of resilience is learning what to release.

That might mean letting go of the belief that you have to please everyone. It might mean accepting that you cannot rescue every person you care about. It might mean forgiving yourself for something that happened years ago. It might even mean acknowledging that the version of yourself you have been trying so hard to become no longer reflects who you really are.

Letting go is often misunderstood as weakness, yet it requires enormous courage. It asks us to trust that we do not have to control everything. It reminds us that our value is not measured by how much we sacrifice or how exhausted we become.

There is also a profound difference between responsibility and ownership. You can care deeply about someone without carrying their pain. You can support another person without taking responsibility for fixing their life. You can be compassionate without neglecting your own wellbeing. Healthy boundaries are not barriers to resilience. They are one of its strongest foundations.

As someone who has faced significant health challenges, loss, and adversity, I have learnt that resilience is not about becoming stronger by carrying more. It is about becoming wiser by recognising what deserves your energy and what does not. Every time I have released an unrealistic expectation or stopped trying to control something beyond my reach, I have created more space for peace, clarity, and purpose.

Perhaps that is the question we should all ask ourselves more often.

What am I carrying today that no longer belongs to me?

The answer may surprise you. It may also set you free.

Resilience is not found in carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. It is found in having the wisdom to know which burdens are yours to carry, and the courage to gently lay the rest down.
